Etymology
καταστροφικός is built from καταστροφή, meaning catastrophe or destruction, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός. καταστροφή itself comes from κατά, meaning down, plus στροφή, a turning, from the verb στρέφω, to turn. The image is of a sudden overturning or downfall, which gave Greek the sense of ruin or disaster, and later gave English catastrophe through the same root.
