Etymology
The word builds on ελεύθερος, the Greek adjective for free. Ancient Greek eleutheros likely traces to a root meaning to belong to the growth or people of a community, in contrast to a slave who did not. From this adjective Greek formed the verb ελευθερώνω, to free, then added the prefix από- and the noun suffix -ωση to get απελευθέρωση, the act or result of setting free.
