Etymology
Υψηλό comes from the ancient Greek adjective ὑψηλός, built on the same root as ὕψος (height) and the adverb ὕψι (on high, aloft). The origin of this root before Greek is not settled. Modern Greek kept the classical form largely intact, but confined it mostly to formal, technical, and written registers, while everyday speech favors the shorter word ψηλός for physical tallness.
