Etymology
Κάδος goes back to Ancient Greek κάδος, meaning a large jar or vessel, often used for wine or for drawing water from a well. Many scholars believe the word is not native Greek but a loanword, related to a Semitic term for jar, such as Hebrew kad. Over time the meaning narrowed and shifted from a clay jar to any large container, and in modern Greek it now covers buckets, bins, and even the drum of a washing machine.
