Etymology
κλασικός entered Modern Greek in the 19th century as a learned borrowing from French classique, itself from Latin classicus. Latin classicus originally described the top tax bracket of Roman citizens, from classis, meaning a division or class of the population. The sense later shifted to mean top-rank or exemplary, then specifically first-rate in literature and art, and finally the standard adjective for the ancient Greco-Roman world.
