Etymology

διαφυγή combines the prefix δια- (through, across) with φυγή (flight), the noun from the verb φεύγω (to flee). The compound already appears in ancient Greek with the sense of escaping through or getting away. Modern Greek keeps the core meaning but extends it to physical leaks of gas or liquid and to the flight of money or tax obligations.
