Etymology
Όρθιος descends from Ancient Greek ὄρθιος, an adjective built on ὀρθός, meaning straight or upright. Ὀρθός itself goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning straight or right, the same root that gave Latin its words for straight and rule. The Modern Greek form kept both the shape and the core sense: something or someone standing straight up.
