Etymology
The word comes from the ancient Greek verb απολύω, meaning to release or set free, itself built from από (away, from) and λύω (to loosen, untie). The adjective απόλυτος originally meant released or unrestricted, and from that sense it shifted to mean unconditional or absolute. The same verb λύω gave Greek the noun απόλυση, meaning release or dismissal.
