Etymology
Κοιτάζομαι is the mediopassive form of κοιτάζω, meaning to look or watch. That verb grew out of κοίτη, meaning bed or resting place, through a verb suffix -άζω. The original sense was likely to keep watch from one's post, which later widened to simply looking or watching. Κοίτη itself traces back to the same root as κεῖμαι, to lie down.
