Etymology
Λεπτό comes from the ancient Greek adjective λεπτός, meaning thin or fine, which itself derives from the verb λέπω, to peel or strip. The neuter form λεπτό was later used as a noun for something small: a thin slice of an hour, hence a minute, and a small coin, hence a cent. This shift from thin to small unit was already established by Hellenistic times.
