Etymology
Μάιος is a direct borrowing from Latin Maius, the name Romans gave the fifth month of their calendar. Ancient writers tied Maius to the goddess Maia and to the Latin word for great, maius, since her month marked the growth of crops in spring. Greek took over the Latin name during the Roman and later Byzantine periods and fitted it into its own masculine noun pattern with the ending -ος. The everyday form Μάης is simply this same borrowed word worn down by common speech.
