Etymology

Εις descends from Ancient Greek εἰς (Attic) and ἐς (Ionic), both meaning motion into or towards a place. Scholars trace the word to an earlier form *ἐνς, a combination of the preposition ἐν (in) with a directional element. In this view the root goes back to the PIE word for 'in'. Modern Greek kept εις mainly for formal and literary use, while everyday speech shifted to σε.
