Etymology
Formed from the noun νύχτα ("night"), continuing ancient Greek νυκτερινός, an adjective derived from the stem of νύξ, νυκτός ("night"). The temporal adjective suffix -ινός (seen also in πρωινός "morning" and βραδινός "evening") marks something belonging to or occurring during the night. The root goes back to the Proto-Indo-European word for night, which has reflexes across the family.
