Etymology
Modern Greek πίσω descends, through loss of the initial unstressed vowel (aphaeresis), from Ancient Greek ὀπίσω 'backwards, behind'. That form was built on the prepositional element ὀπι- (related to ἐπί 'on, upon, at') with an adverbial ending. The underlying Indo-European element denoted nearness or position 'at/upon', which shifted toward 'after' and 'behind' in spatial and temporal use.
