Etymology

πάω is the everyday, contracted verb for "go" in Modern Greek. It descends from Ancient Greek ὑπάγω ("to lead under, withdraw, go away"), formed from ὑπό ("under") plus ἄγω ("to lead, drive"). Through medieval forms the prefix wore down: ὑπάγω gave 'πάγω and then πάω. It shares one paradigm with the fuller form πηγαίνω.
