Etymology
παρακαλώ is the modern reflex of Ancient Greek παρακαλέω, a compound of the prefix παρά- ('beside, to one's side') and the verb καλέω ('to call'). The literal sense 'to call (someone) to one's side' broadened to 'to summon, exhort, comfort, beseech', and in Modern Greek it crystallized into the everyday politeness formula 'please / you're welcome'. The root καλέω descends from the Proto-Indo-European root *kelh₁- 'to call, shout'.
