Etymology

Modern Greek δικός descends from Byzantine/Medieval Greek ἐδικός, itself derived from Ancient Greek οἰκεῖος ('of the household, related, one's own'), built on οἶκος ('house'). Over time the initial vowel was reanalysed away, leaving δικός, which today functions almost exclusively as a possessive adjective paired with the genitive personal pronouns (δικός μου, δικός σου).
