Etymology

Derives from Ancient Greek δουλεία ('slavery, servitude'), an abstract noun built on δοῦλος ('slave'). In Modern Greek the sense softened from 'servitude' to ordinary 'work, job', and a stress shift split the two words: δουλειά (/ðuˈʎa/) 'work' versus δουλεία (/ðuˈli.a/) 'slavery'. The base noun δοῦλος is of pre-Greek (Aegean) origin and has no secure Indo-European etymology.
