Etymology
Derived from the adverb/preposition πλησίον ('near, nearby'), itself from Ancient Greek πλησίος ('close'), combined with the productive denominal verbal suffix -άζω. The verb already existed in Ancient Greek as πλησιάζω ('to bring near, to approach'). The base πλησίον is related to πέλας ('near'), but its deeper Indo-European origin is disputed and may be Pre-Greek.
