Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἄρρωστος ('without strength, weak, sick'), formed from the privative prefix ἀ- ('not, without') plus a stem of ῥώννυμι / ῥώμη ('to be strong, strength'). The doubling of the rho (ἀ- + ῥ- → ἀρρ-) is a regular feature when the alpha-privative joins a word beginning with rho. Literally it describes someone 'lacking strength.' The same strength-root survives in Modern Greek ρώμη ('vigor') and εύρωστος ('robust').
