Etymology
From Ancient Greek θεωρία ('a looking at, viewing, contemplation, speculation'), an abstract noun built on θεωρός ('spectator, one who attends'). The word is connected to the family of θέα ('sight, view') and θεάομαι ('to behold'). It passed into Latin as theoria and from there into the modern European languages, including English 'theory'.
