Etymology
From Ancient Greek πεδίον (pedíon) 'plain, open field', a derivative of πέδον (pédon) 'ground, soil, earth'. This traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root *ped- 'foot; ground, that which is underfoot'. The modern sense extended from physical 'level ground' to abstract 'domain' and the technical 'field' of physics.
