Etymology

Derived from the verb σκουπίζω ("to sweep") and the noun σκούπα ("broom"), with the diminutive/result suffix -ίδι, so a σκουπίδι is literally "a thing that has been swept up." The σκουπ- root entered Greek from Latin scōpae / Italian-Venetian scopa ("broom, twigs"), not from inherited Greek stock. The neuter diminutive then specialized to mean the swept-up refuse itself.
