Etymology

The word traces back to ancient Greek μῦς ποντικός, literally the Pontic mouse, a rodent associated with the Pontus region on the Black Sea. Over time the adjective ποντικός came to stand alone for the animal itself, and the diminutive suffix -ίκι was added to give ποντίκι, the modern word for mouse. The same root πόντος also gives Greek its word for sea and open water.
