Etymology

Χάρισμα comes from the verb χαρίζομαι, meaning to give freely or grant as a favor. That verb in turn comes from χάρις, meaning grace or favor. The suffix -μα marks the result of an action, so χάρισμα literally names the thing that grace produces: a gift. English borrowed the word directly as charisma.
