The word comes from the verb καταυλίζομαι, meaning to settle down or lodge in a place, itself built on αυλή, the ancient Greek word for a yard, courtyard, or enclosed pen for animals. The prefix κατα- adds the sense of settling down or coming to rest, and the suffix -μός turns the verb into a noun naming the result: a place where people or troops have settled and pitched their tents. Over time the word narrowed to its main modern sense, an encampment.
