Etymology

The word combines the prefix από- (away, from) with the verb φοιτώ (to attend, to go to and fro, as at school). Απο-φοιτώ literally means to stop attending, that is, to finish one's studies. The suffix -ηση turns the verb into an abstract noun naming the act or event, giving αποφοίτηση, the state or ceremony of having finished school.
