Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek παρατηρέω, built from the prefix παρά (beside, alongside) and the verb τηρέω (to watch, to keep, to guard). Together they gave a sense of watching closely or keeping an eye on something as it happens. Modern Greek kept the verb largely intact and uses παρατήρησα as its simple past form for the first person singular.
