Etymology
Εξαίρεση comes from the ancient Greek verb ἐξαιρέω, meaning to take out or remove, formed from the prefix ἐξ- (out of) and αἱρέω (to take, to seize). The noun form ἐξαίρεσις originally meant a taking out or removal, and this sense narrowed over time to the idea of setting something apart from a general rule. Modern Greek kept this abstract legal and logical sense.
