Etymology

Επάγγελμα comes from ancient Greek ἐπάγγελμα, which originally meant a promise or public announcement. It derives from the verb ἐπαγγέλλομαι, built from ἐπί (upon, toward) and the root seen in ἀγγέλλω (to announce, to bring a message). Over time the sense narrowed from a general declaration to the specific claim a person makes about their trade or calling, and eventually to the modern meaning of profession or occupation. The origin of the ἀγγελ- root itself is disputed among linguists, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
