Etymology
Πια comes from the ancient comparative πλέον, meaning 'more'. In medieval spoken Greek the form wore down through πλιό to πια, dropping the liquid consonant, a common shift in colloquial pronunciation. The old sense of 'more' shifted to mark a boundary in time, so πια came to mean 'any more' in negative sentences and 'now, at last' in positive ones. It is the everyday spoken counterpart of the more formal πλέον.
