Etymology
Ρύζι descends from ancient Greek ὄρυζα (óryza), the word Greeks used for the grain after contact with cultures further east. The origin of óryza itself is not Indo-European; scholars trace it to an Asian source, possibly Dravidian or Old Iranian, but no reconstructed root is agreed upon. The same ancient Greek word later spread through Latin oryza into most European languages, including English rice.
