τηλεγράφημα is a nineteenth-century coinage built from τῆλε (far off) and γράφω (to write), with the resultative suffix -μα added on top. It names the message itself, the piece of paper delivered to the recipient, not the machine or the wire network that carried it. The verb γράφω traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to scratch or carve, since early writing meant cutting marks into a surface. The element τῆλε has no securely established further Indo-European cognates, so its deeper prehistory is left open here.
