Etymology
Συκώτι comes from the ancient phrase ήπαρ συκωτόν, literally 'fig-fed liver'. Cooks fattened geese and pigs on figs before slaughter, prizing the resulting rich liver. Over time the adjective συκωτόν absorbed the noun's meaning on its own and became the ordinary Modern Greek word for liver. A similar practice lies behind the Latin phrase iecur ficatum, source of French foie and Italian fegato, though these are parallel formations rather than borrowings from Greek.
