Etymology
Σόδα entered Greek as a direct borrowing from Italian soda. The Italian word itself traces back through Medieval Latin to an Arabic term for a saltwort plant burned to produce soda ash. It is not an inherited Greek word, so it has no native Greek root or Indo-European derivation of its own within Greek.
