Etymology

Σχήμα comes from ancient Greek σχῆμα, built on the stem σχ- found in the verb ἔχω (to have, to hold) in its aorist form. The suffix -μα marks the result of an action, so the word originally meant the outcome of holding oneself a certain way: a posture, then a form or shape. Greek kept this sense, and English borrowed the word twice, once as scheme and once as schema.
