Υποτίτλος is a modern Greek compound built from the prefix ὑπό- (under) and the noun τίτλος (title). Τίτλος itself is a borrowing from Latin titulus. The formation mirrors English subtitle and Italian sottotitolo, both built the same way from sub- (under) plus a word for title.
