Etymology
Κατοχή comes from the verb κατέχω, built from κατά (down, thoroughly) plus έχω (to have, to hold). The root of έχω goes back to the Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ-, meaning to hold or to overcome. So κατοχή literally means a holding down, a sense that split into legal possession and, in modern history, military occupation.
