Etymology
της is the genitive singular feminine of the Modern Greek definite article ο/η/το, inherited directly from Ancient Greek τῆς (earlier, non-Attic-Ionic τᾶς). The article descends from the Proto-Indo-European demonstrative *so (m.), *seh₂ (f.), *tód (n.), whose oblique cases were built on the t-stem *to-. The same demonstrative gave English the/that and German der/die/das. In Modern Greek the identical form does double duty as the feminine genitive article and as the unstressed (weak) genitive personal pronoun 'her / to her'.
