Etymology
Formed from the prefix κατά 'down' and θλῖψις 'a pressing, affliction', itself derived from the verb θλίβω 'to press, squeeze, oppress'. The literal sense of 'a pressing down' makes the modern Greek term a close semantic parallel to the Latin-based 'depression' (de- 'down' + premere 'to press'), both built on the same image of being weighed down. The deeper Proto-Indo-European origin of θλίβω is uncertain.
