Derived from the verb μολύνω ('to stain, defile, contaminate'), attested already in Ancient Greek, combined with the deverbal suffix -σις (modern -ση) that forms nouns of action or result. Ancient Greek μόλυνσις meant 'a staining, defilement.' The origin of μολύνω itself is uncertain and is often regarded as Pre-Greek. In modern Greek the noun specialized toward biological 'infection' and environmental 'contamination.'
