Etymology
Ισορροπία is a compound of the adjective ίσος ('equal') and ροπή ('inclination, swing, tendency'), the latter derived from the verb ρέπω ('to lean, incline'). The literal idea is an 'equal inclination' — two forces leaning equally against each other, hence a state of balance. The word is attested already in ancient Greek and was later taken into scientific Latin and English as 'isorropia'.
