Υποχωρώ comes from ancient Greek ὑποχωρέω, a compound of the prefix ὑπό (under, beneath, gradually) and χωρέω (to make room, to give way, to move). The combined sense is to step back and yield space, which gave rise to the modern meanings of retreating, backing down, or subsiding. The verb has kept largely the same meaning across more than two thousand years of use.
