Etymology
Χόρτο descends from ancient Greek χόρτος, which meant an enclosed feeding ground or the fodder found in it. Over time the sense narrowed from the enclosure itself to the grass growing inside it. The same root gave Latin hortus, meaning garden, which entered English through words like horticulture.
