Etymology

Μπάντα entered Greek from Italian banda, which meant both a body of armed men and later a group of musicians. Italian banda itself traces to a Germanic word for a flag or standard, the idea being a group gathered under one sign. Greek kept the musical sense (a brass or marching band) and also developed the everyday sense of 'side', from the idea of a group or block standing to one side.
