Încotro is built from the prefix în- (into, toward) and the old adverb cotro (which way). Cotro itself is thought to come from a Slavic word for 'which,' related to forms like Russian который and Bulgarian който. Romanian fused the two into a single question-and-relative word for direction, much as English welded 'where' and 'to' into 'whither.'
