Etymology
Sită comes from the Slavic word sito, meaning sieve. Romanian absorbed it during centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors, along with many other household and craft terms. The same root gives Russian, Bulgarian, and Serbian words for sieve, all pronounced close to sito. It is one of the clearer surviving traces of Slavic vocabulary in everyday Romanian.
