Etymology
Îneca descends from Latin necare, "to kill," which in Vulgar Latin narrowed to mean specifically "to kill by drowning." Romanian attached the prefix î(n)- to this root, giving a form close to *innecare, the direct source of îneca. The same prefixed Latin root also produced French noyer, "to drown." The plain Latin root, in nex and necis, "violent death," points back to an older Indo-European word for death.
