Etymology
Cheltuială is built from the verb cheltui, meaning to spend, plus the noun-forming suffix -ială, which turns a verb into an abstract noun of action or result. Cheltui itself entered Romanian from Hungarian költeni, to spend, part of a layer of Hungarian loanwords absorbed through centuries of contact in Transylvania. Because the root is a later borrowing rather than an inherited Latin or Proto-Indo-European word, Romanian dictionaries do not trace it back to a PIE root.
