Etymology
Existență entered Romanian from French existence, itself from Latin existentia, the noun formed from the present participle of exsistere, to come into being or stand out. Exsistere is built from ex-, out, and sistere, to stand, a reduplicated verb related to stare, to stand. The word belongs to the large layer of Romanian abstract nouns borrowed or reshaped after French and Latin models during the nineteenth century modernization of the language.
